Giveaways?

Has anyone tried a giveaway? What kinds of things should I look out for? I don't want to end up with a bunch of freebie seekers, but a giveaway seems like a great way to get things started.

Giveaways are great but you must ensure that you WILL have huge group of visitors doing whatever submission or process is needed for the giveaway. As if this site has just opened and has no hype or not many visitors already you probably should avoid a giveaway unless it's a small giveaway. More than likely if you don't already have a bunch of people visiting your website a giveaway won't help much as very few will find out about it and enter and ultimately you lose money because you won't really gain any new members.

Giveaways. The best giveaways are points. Let's say you have points collected at the forum that's being used as money or something, you can then just give promos and/or games to be played by your visitors and reward them with point that they can use as money in your site. That's one idea.

Giveaways are a great form of marketing. Sure, you will get most of the people that come for the giveaway and leave the site. You might, however, gain a few regular visitors because of it. That in itself should be worth it. There are many other forms of marketing your website, such as email marketing, that I would suggest looking into as well. Good luck!
