Do we really need a stat counter on our website? I do install stat counters on my website and blogs. Well, at least they look pretty there Smiley But I just wonder if we really need it. What do you think?

I don't think they look too good particularly if your stats are very low. It only gets impressive if the count is very high. I visited a blog today that had a stats counter reading of over 900,000. It was very discreet and well placed.

I would only go for a stat counter if my site has huge hits and good reputation among the internet surfers. Having a stat counter on a new potentially good site would have a counter effect on its popularity in the near future. It is better not to go for stat counter when you are actually developing a site.

Most stat counter services give us an option to set the desired starting number. So that impressive number doesn't always represent the real stats of the blog. That's one of the stat counter drawbacks.

It is a must to track your visitors if you have a growing site.Best status counter is with various features like visitor's country,map/location,yesterday's page view, this month's/week's page view,ip address etc.
You can get one by searching in google.Use the best one as your choice and need.

I would rather keep my stats to myself, rather than broadcasting it to all and sundry.

I much prefer the use of analytics, which I think is what you are referring to nirod.

Its really advisable to have a visible stat counter on your site if you have many visitors there for it to count. Stat counters are actually used to impress visitors more showing them how famous your site us for having many visitors. And if you do not have that many, your stat counter won't have that much numbers either.
